About Mary's Wee Site

This site was built by Dr Stu Ross. Mary's aim was to create a homepage that would reflect her, her business and be entertaining. Thus the feel is not of "sleak marketing", which Mary thought suggested desperation! Essey's quality goods and personal service insures that customers keep coming back and its reputation is spread by word of mouth. This site is intended to open up Essey's services to the non trade public.

The Home page of the site features the Ulster tartan and Mary's own favourite bagpipe tune, Highland Cathedral. My insider on things piping, Major Richard Powell, informs me that the tune is German and not the sort of thing pipers themselves like to play!

The Welcome page features Mairi's Wedding and the tartan is a lightened up version of Ross. I thought I would leave my mark here some place!

The Goods & Servises page features a lightened up version of the Montgomery tartan and the tune is Highland Laddie.

The Highland Outfitters page does not feature a tartan background but contain thistles - ouch! The tartan in the pictures is Ulster, again. The tune is The Bonny Lass o' Fyvie.

The Pipe Band page background tartan is the Hunting Sinclair, again brightened up a little. The tune playing is another of Mary's favourites, The Skye Boat Song. As I write this Mary is almost certainly on her beloved Island and viewing the Coolin Hills.

The Flute and Accordion Band page includes a background image of the Albertbridge Accordion Band. The shop is situated on Albert Bridge Road and this seemed fitting. The background tune is a favourite of mine when played by the marvellous Mourne Young Defenders from Kilkeel. It is usually known as Aces High but is actually entitled The Luftwaffe March and was penned for the film Battle of Britain by the English composer Ron Goodwin. On this page there is a link to David Montgomery, a very good friend of Mary's and mine. David plays with the Mourne Young Defenders and the tune on his cyber home is Semper Fidelis, which is a United States Marines march. The band wear replica U.S. Marine uniforms.

The Contact & Ordering page plays Road to the Isles. The tartan is McLaren.

The Links page features a wee jig called Paddywhack! The tartan is Taylor.

The Befast page features a blurred version of the Ulster tartan. The tune was recommended by Major Richard Powell and is The Rowan Tree.

Finally, getting self referential, as the philosophers and logicians say, this page features a bagpipe tune known as the Ballintore Hornpipe (I was after another tune called Ballintore Fancy but could not track this air down). My father comes from a tiny hamlet called Balintore, Ross-shire and it has many, many fond memories for me. Ballintore with two ls is in Wexford and was famed for its pipers. My Balintore is just too wee to be famous for anything but the Ross and Vass names which make up most of the population. You might say interbreeding, we say well bred! Both names are Viking in origin. The tartan on this page is Morrison, which was my Aunt Katy's husband's name. She was from Balintore and he was from the Shetlands. Again, Morrison is Viking in origin but probably not via Normandy. Funny old world .....
